• Bottom Line Check Point's ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2017 adds a wealth of security components to its core powerful firewall. Beyond the firewall, though, most of this suite's significant features are licensed from other vendors.
The typical release pattern for a vendor involves a standalone antivirus program plus a full suite that builds on that antivirus. In some cases, there's an even bigger suite, a mega-suite with more features, often including backup and tune-up. Check Point's pattern is a bit different.
The ZoneAlarm product line includes a free firewall, free antivirus plus firewall, and feature-enhanced paid editions of both. The line culminates with ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2017, which fits best in the mega-suite category. It has some attractive features, but a surprising number of them are licensed from others. Check Point guarantees that as long as your subscription is current and you have the Threat Emulation component enabled, your system won't get infested by malware. If it does, you can get a refund.
's similar guarantee requires that you enable automatic renewal and give tech support a chance to remotely fix the problem. Norton's guarantee also includes a tech support step. If you've seen either of Check Point's commercial ZoneAlarm products, you've seen the suite's main window already. Three big panels represent Antivirus & Firewall, Web & Privacy, and Mobility & Data. A list of three or four related features appears in each panel, and clicking on a panel opens a page that lets you manage those features. The real difference is that in the suite, everything is enabled. Shared Features Everything that you get with is also present in ZoneAlarm Extreme.
I'll recap the high points here. If you want to know more, just read my review of that antivirus offering.
ZoneAlarm licenses antivirus technology from Editors' Choice Kaspersky, but the antivirus testing labs clearly state that their results apply only to the actual product tested. Until very recently, I only had results from one lab directly testing ZoneAlarm—it earned a score of 76.4 percent in Virus Bulletin's RAP (Reactive and Proactive) test. The average score in that test for the products I follow is 81.77 percent, so this is a little low. In the latest report from I found the ZoneAlarm received its own scores. It earned 5.0 points for protection, 5.0 for performance, and 6.0 for usability, for a total of 16 points. Kaspersky scored a perfect 18 points in the same test, as did Bitdefender.
